Chris, thou dost assume too much. I am certainly not in favor of 
privatization and I've said so many times on this list. In fact, I've 
criticized Maggie for having the opportunity to do good - but not the 
understanding to carry it out - hence privatization.

What is needed in the national "people owned" monopolies is not 
privatization, but competition. Keith tells us the privatized British Water 
monopoly is doing quite well - but I wrote in a very recent post that's 
probably by comparison to the mess they inherited. I understand that more 
water was lost out of leaky pipes than ever reached the consumers.

The laws are made by the government - those elected representatives that 
you want to control practically everything - though many of them are indeed 
lawyers.

Start anywhere you wish. Let's wipe out the entire tariff and import quota 
system tomorrow.

Only problem is that you would have every large corporation in the country 
against you, also the unions, and probably the farmers (who, in the US, are 
mostly corporations, anyway).

However, don't let that deter you.
