Interesting which newspapers (and one person on this list) jumped so quickly to mock the 'doomsayers".

Brian,

Heaven forbid that anything should be printed that in any way might cast doubt on the revealed truth.

The idea that global warming might increase the thickness of the ice was mooted a decade or two ago. The argument went something like: the warmer prevailing wind would carry more water north, where it would cool, dumping water on the ice thereby making it thicker.

So, if the ice increases in thickness, that's Global Warming.

If the ice decreases in thickness, that's Global Warming.

Meantime - as I've said often - in the 70's the Global Climatological Conference feared we were one sixth of the way toward the next Ice Age. (After

Now the worry is that we may be warming.

Perhaps in another 30 years, we'll be one third of the way towards the next Ice Age.

Who knows?

Well, the Global Warmers are certain, which should send a shiver up your backs.

I first became a sceptic back in 1973 with a paper on DDT. I found it was the most efficient, the cheapest, and the safest pesticide we've ever come up with. But what was frightening was the mountain of non-evidence against it. The birds were being wiped out, the eagles were suffering, the animals were in trouble. The frightening stories were bloodcurdling - even to Rachel Carson's plaintive "a world without a robin" - Omigawd! (During the period of DDT, the robin population increased by 12 times.)

The fact of the matter, the so-called environmentalists didn't count (birds 16 species up, 9 down). The least they could do was to check before crying doom. (All the raptors up.) The Audubon Count was in their Field Notes - that Rachel read. (All the animal counts were up except the mountain sheep - I don't know why.)

The Hawk Mountain Sanctuary count handled the raptors.

But nothing mattered but the need to get this awful stuff banned. So it was.

That's when I labelled it Pop Dread.

There has been a lot of nonsense since. At the moment it's Global Warming.

Common to all PopDread is not a hidden agenda. In fact, it's pretty open. It's all the good things, such as abolishing smog, using the sun to cook our bacon and eggs, saving the One-Winged Nut Hatch and the rest. It turns out that all these good things will happen when we properly fight GW.

When Hansen kind of changed horses in midstream - he now downgrades CO2 and upgrades methane - I too must be getting paranoid, for I thought, hah! Now, the Vegans have got to him.

Harry
