Ray,

Remember some Fwers think a tree is a tree is a tree. I am still smarting from when I talked about trees that grow like weeds and are as valuable.

A tree is a tree is a tree.

What happens is that we view a tree and regard it as an ancient natural monument - or as a weed. In fact, it is a tree. Anything else comes from our mind - not from the tree.

I've gone on record as preferring the live deciduous forest to the dead redwood forest. The deciduous forests (the weeds) are an absolute mess of growing things.

When you get deeper into a redwood forest, which few do, you find more fun from it, mostly from the fallen trunks that are everywhere - with "things" growing in them.

Redwood is fast growing and is a cheap wood for decking and suchlike - not much good for structural strength. One of my speeches was "The best redwood is a 2x4 by 8ft redwood." I would argue that most people would visit the redwoods once or twice in their lives. I enjoy my redwood all year (well it is in California - where this week we've had temperatures reaching the mid 90's).

Yes, a tree is just a tree, but we can make a lot of it.
