THE INTERNET AND 9/11

(USA) -- One of the post-Sept. 11 cultural changes that
actually stuck was Americans' use of the Internet to get news,
according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project. One year
later, consumption of Web news is still 10 to 15 percent higher
than before Sept. 11, after an initial spike of 40 percent.
"Church attendances jumped in the months after the attacks but
are now back down to pre-Sept. 11 levels. But the trauma of Sept.
11 continues to have a profound effect on what some people do
online and on their views about the Web," said Lee Rainie,
director of the Pew project. He said the online news habit seems
to be permanent. "People now know that in a crisis or in an
environment hungry for information, they can turn to the online
world for the things they want," Rainie adds. (Media Life 11
