In crisis (plague) times such as these I keep recalling Oedipus Rex. About
12 years ago, I was reading D.P. Moynihan's history of LBJ's war on poverty,
_Maximum Feasible Misunderstanding_ and it occurred to me that Sophocles'
play was about the state -- the founding of political power in violence and
the consequences that inevitably flow from that foundation. One of the big
problems with electoral democracy, it seems to me, is that each newly
elected government sees as its primary mandate vengence against the agenda
of the previous administration. That is to say, each new tyrant "kills" "his
father" the previous tyrant. Perhaps the civil service is Jocasta in this
tragedy. ;-)
