Yes, that is precisely the source of the problem:
Qua "consumer", the person pursues the lowest
possible price. Qua "worker", the same person
pursues the highest possible wage -- or at least
a living wage. The individual spends all his or her
time screwing himself over and trying to stop
himself from doing it -- BUT! Big but! The
person does not realize they are doing this to themself,
because when the person is seeking the lowest price
is during "free time", whereas when the person
is trying to get a decent wage is during "working hours".

How many workers do not "put the office out of their
mind" when they punch out?

The psychoanalytic word is:

    SPLITTING

although psychoanalysts generally have
a pretty poor track record of dealing with
the damage working conditions under capitalism
do to persons.

The nadir here is an article
by Freud's stoolie Karl Abraham, from 1907,
concerning one working class woman who
avoided dealing with her problems not being
happy as a servant by succeeding in getting
a higher-class job. Did I make that
clear: The woman *evaded dealing with her
[psychological] problem of being unhappy being
a servant, by getting a higher-class job where
the things that so greatly distressed her did
not get done to her any more*!

In the annals of "treasonous clerks", I
submit for nomination medical doctor Karl
Abraham. He should have been sentenced to
what he worked hard to prevent persons from
escaping: working in Polish
coal mines (Abraham was a disability certification
doctor, as well as a "psychoanalyst").
