One thing for sure is that "you" can't affect anything
substantively by casting a ballot in your local ballot box.

I think it's pretty sad that a person has very little
possibility of changing anything by peaceable means, but,
especially with "the great equalizer" they have a
much better chance of changing something through
violence.

As for "conspiracy theories", I think that we should
not exercise ourselves overmuch trying to determine if they
are "really true". Instead I think we should treat all
the plausible ones seriously and change our society in
such a way that there should be far less likelihood
of anything like them happening or
even seeming like they could have happened
in future. And we should see what guidance we can
derive even from the implausible ones, too.

If Conedleeza Rice had remembered Mr. Byck (the dude who
apparently tried to hijack a Boeing 747 from Atlanta in
1974 to rid the world of the problem he perceived Richard
Nixon to be, by flying it into the White House), instead of
searching the skies intently for rogue ICBMs that
might turn up somewhere in the next decade long
after our terrestrial forces could wipe out their launchers,
perhaps we would not have had to deal with the
consequences of Mr. Atta succeeding where Byck failed.

Why can't these people simply say:

"Damn! We screwed up big time.
We're in over our heads. How can
we even have confidence in ourselves to recognize
who could do a better job than ourselves
so we could hand over the problem to them?
God bless America -- she needs it."
