For those FWers who still do not believe that the brain is substantively
hard-wired, I would recommend "Phantoms in the Brain" by V. S.
Ramachandran, acknowledged to be one of the world's leading neuroscientists.

The discussion about phantom limbs from chapter two will suffice here.
Ramachandran mentions that those who have lost limbs will often feel them
(and imagine they are manipulating them) for months, years, even decades
afterwards. The relevant brain cells take that long to "re-educate"
themselves to the loss.
