Brian, seeing the last name mentioned in this article prompts me to add that having a baby can be a very good career move for a woman, as long as she isn't in the everyday category of M-F 9-5 workers. According to the magazines in my market's check-out line, next up: J-Lo. How much more of a dual society can it get when this basic fact of life can be so virtually rewarding for some and increasingly, financially crippling to most?

Bah Humbug, Dec. 8, 2002. 01:53 PM CANADA'S RICHEST GETTING POORER The richest of Canada's rich are getting poorer, according to a ranking of the country's wealthy citizens by Canadian Business magazine. The fourth-annual Rich 100 list, which is to be released today, is once again topped by Kenneth Thomson of the Thomson Corp. publishing empire, with a net worth of $21.48 billion; down from $23.7 billion last year. In second place is grocery king Galen Weston with a net worth of $9.18 billion, up from $8.6 billion last year. The combined net worth of Canada's top-100 this year is $111.1 billion, which is down 7.6 per cent from last year's total of $120.3 billion. Ten members from last year's exclusive club have dropped out altogether, including some of the longest-standing and best-known in Canadian business. "While the fall of Internet titans is a familiar tale by now, this year's Canadian Business Rich 100 list shows that the meltdown is hitting some non- techies, too," said investment editor Jason Kirby. Peter Munk of property giant Trizec, and Pierre Karl Peladeau of Quebecor Inc., both missed this year's cutoff of $270 million in net worth to make the list. Meanwhile, although still making the list, Charles Bronfman's net worth has fallen 70 per cent since 2000 to $1.63 billion. Despite the collapse of the tech bubble, Jeff Skoll, co-founder of online auction site EBay, remains Canada's richest tech entrepreneur at $3.47 billion. Celine Dion is worth $305 million this year, up from $295 million last year.
