The problem with existing asbestos is that removing it is more likely to harm people than leaving it alone.

Asbestos wasn't used for fun, but in situations where heat and fire were important. I built a "medieval" fire in my living room that extended into the room and had a flat stone area for sitting. Asbestos was the necessary insulation where danger from the hot fire could prove risky. We should remember that asbestos probably saved a lot of lives.

Its removal ended in many places when it was realized it was better to leave alone.
