Perhaps because "conservatives" are imagined to be a block of people like the "blacks", the "hispanics", the "liberals" the "Catholics" and so on - when each block contains individuals with all kinds of variations.

What a shame that most of these "individuals" don't think of
themselves this way, but rather think of themselves as
instantiations of whatever type (PhD scientists are not
immune from this nonsensical superstition, either!).

Reminds me of a Ziegler cartoon from The New Yorker, where
a TV camera team goes in a Department Store for
a "man in the street" interview, and sticks their
microphone in a sales clerk's face. The sales cleark
says:

First of all, I'm Debby the person.

And I've always thought of "roots" as something
pigs poke at with their snouts rather than
as the provenances which human beings would
pride themselves in.

The main thing wrong with one Jewish definition of the
name of God is that they thereby *alienate* what we
ourselves are into something outside us:

    I am who am

And you?
