I know Schutz and Husserl just a little bit. I've never read their works but
in the course of my sociological studies I have read about their work,
especially as it relates to the way George Herbert Mead and some others
tried to get away from the one-sided and sterile theories of the
funcionalists.
[snip]

Different strokes for different folks. I envy those who
can understand Mead -- or maybe they had helpful teachers?
Then there is Charles Sanders Pierce....

I really believe [credo quia absurdum...]
that a mentor can make a big difference.
I've never had a teacher who really opened up anything
new to me. Therefore I've tended to stick to the books
that I have been able to make sense of by myself.

Among my failed attempts are not only philosophers like
Mead, Pierce and Kant, but also mathematical
recursive function theory, including Kleene and other
classic texts. It's humbling, but I try not to let it
totally crush me.
