Watching the contorted faces of Bush and Blair last night on Newsnight
during the press conference after their private meeting, I thought that
here were two desperate men. Something serious had happened between them.
They'd had a fight but had to pretend that all was well.
Blair is desperate because he's taken his own Labour Party MPs to the edge
of the precipice and they're not going to stomach his support for Bush for
much longer.

Bush is desperate because if he loses the support of Bush then he has no
halfway heavyweight international support for his policy and he might not
get a second resolution through the UN Security Council.
What a profoundly insightful Bushism you have
coined here!
I do think that one of Bush's problems is fearing losing his own
support for his plans. That would indeed be distressing for him.

what he is threatening to do -- invade Iraq without UN support. But before
then he will have to face the demonstrations of 15 February all round the
world and in his own country.

I had a different take on things: As I see it, Bush merely has
to drag out this sh-t long enough and more and more
other nations will come on board because countries always sign up
for a war (any war that happens to come along...) in the long run.
THEN he can safely ask the UN for a second resolution.
Time is on Bush's side. And, of course, we want the boys
home before Christmas -- I mean, before the weather in
Germany -- I meant: Iraq gets too cold -- I Meant too hot.
Why can't Hitler stop misspelling "Nazi" as "Baath"?
Damned Kaiser!
