An American Senator appearing on BBC Newsnight the other night and smoothly
assured us once again that the Iraq affair is "nothing to do with oil, of
course".

I see from today's FT that Royal Dutch/Shell has had disappointing results
and revealed that "it was having trouble replacing exhausted reserves."
This, from the second largest traded oil company in the world is quite
significant, I'd have thought?

I think this gives the first glimpse of what is going to be the driving
factor in the conduct of nations from now onwards and for the next generation.
