We had a superb Panorama programme devoted to Iraq on BBC TV last night. Ninety minutes of statements and cross-examination under the chairmanship of David Dimbleby. This was TV at its very best and I hope it will be transmitted in many other countries.
All possible points of view were expressed by experts and spokespeople from many countries (including Perle from the US and several different opinions from the Arab world). To my surprise ('cos I usually don't have much time for army types -- having served under them for two years), I think the best contribution came from General Sir Michael Rose, ex-Chief of the British Defence Staff. Towards the end of the programme and in quiet tones he simply said that army generals need clear priorities. He thought that the priorities of the modern world are: 1. Terrorism; 2. The Israel-Palestine problem; 3. North Korea; 4. Iraq.
