Obviously its been a bust. In 177 years only 2% of those who could afford to exercise their artistic talent in training could make a living at it so they went back to war again and again and again to try to do it for THEIR grandchildren instead. Wasn't this the old Dude who thought that only the land owners should vote?
REH
Here's something the youngest Dude said about owning land:
(22Apr02, The Associated Press, filed at 1:36 p.m. ET; "Earth Day")
Bush said that, because he and first lady Laura Bush own a ranch in Texas, "for us, every day is Earth Day.... If you own your own land, every day is Earth Day."

I don't know anything about John Adams (other than that I like this quote -- or at least the way I interpret it, although, if I read the words closely, it seems unclear: Is Adams saying that "the arts of legislation and administration" are the first (lowest) or the last (highest)? Etc.
As for Americans aspiring to be artists, I don't know how many even *want* to be artists. Maybe if "you" are one, or are frustrated trying to become one, then maybe you see America as having lots of them, somewhat like if "you" are a doctor in some arcane specialization, you see a lot of persons with that disease which most of us will never see even one of.
I think that I, like Ray, am discouraged and angry, but maybe if one put Ray's perspective and mine together (Come one and all!...), we'd find the whole is "greater" than the sum of its parts.

We also said "growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer

SOmeone helped me find the fine John Adams quote:
"The science of government it is my duty to study, more

manner,
all other arts. I must study politics and war, that our sons

porcelain."
Sweet dreams, Harry....
