Just one more reason to proceed with more efficient sustainable energy resources, evoking the *Precautionary Principle* that some things are cheaper in the long run if done right from the beginning.

That problem will escalate, with more than half of the nation's 103 commercial reactors facing mandatory shutdown in the next three decades, according to U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission data compiled by The Times.
"We are now about to enter the era where large reactors are going to be coming off line," said Daniel Hirsch, director of the nuclear watchdog Committee to Bridge the Gap. "A reactor gives you maybe 50 years of energy, and 500,000 years of waste."
I am reminded of something I think I heard about Madam Curie. Her brother got cancer from the X-rays. She knew (or was at least pretty sure of) the connection. But she didn't say anything about the dangers of X-rays out of concern that negative publicity would have a detrimental effect on people's acceptance and use of X-rays.
So maybe it's appropriate to quote from the fine essay Harry posted, again:
Now, admittedly, saving people from drowning is a noble exercise.
But preventing them from being tossed in the river would be even nobler.
