Ray, I guess my comments come from experiences I had during the five years I spent in the Jerusalem area and from comments made by Israelis themselves. I certainly feel that people should be able to decide how religious they want to be but, if they are agnostic, they should not claim that they are there for religious purposes. There certainly are many 'in name' Muslims who do not actively follow its tenants.

Bill and Keith,

I don't know where you guys get this "the Jews in Israel aren't actively Jewish" stuff.    I work with people constantly who both live in and go and come from Israel and they are all devoutly and actively Jewish.    You might get such a statement from an ultra-orthodox person who doesn't think that anyone who goes to a reform synagogue is actively Jewish to make such a statement.   Otherwise it sounds like Kierkegaard writing that no one has the passion for a real war when the country had been at war for thirty years.

Come on guys.   It doesn't compute.   You are both better than that.

As some one who is pro-Palestinian with a Jewish daughter-in-law and a Jewish granddaughter, I strongly argue for a separation of Judaism and Israel since very few in Israel are actively Jewish.

Well . . . here you have the advantage over me. I have little idea of religious attendance of Israelis though I get the impression that those Israelis who have settled in the West Bank will discover their Jewishness very quickly when and if their homes are under threat as a consequence of the Roadmap..

Right wing Christians argue for Israel at the same time that they tend to be anti-Jewish. Strong Israeli supporters accuse those who have any feelings for Palestinians as being anti-Jewish. Both positions tend to harm Judaism.

A close relative of mine and a friend have visited Israel in recent years and they've both come back with strong views about the injustice done to Palestinians.
