I thought of something after my original posting about "the 14 million":
Are we to infer that this paltry diminutude which presumably has only the most meager chance of hanging on to existence must be at least an order of magnitude *smaller* than the number which Moses led out of Egypt? Looks like it to me.
Another point: Where did Y-w-h get the stupid idea of a "saving remnant"? Nothing less than a *hoard* -- saving or otherwise -- counts. And, as Kant famously did not say, a rogue asteroid is nobler than a virtuous man because it has greater mass.
An interesting exercise is to imagine that all the currently squirming warm metabolizing/catabolizing human bodies on the planet were pureed in a Cuisinart and poured out (that Sherwin Williams paint icon: "Cover the earth!") --> that the puree of them all was poured out over the earth, and to compute the thickness of the layer which the resultant emulsion would constitute. I think I ran the numbers once, and, verily, the earth is quite sparsely populated -- if I remember correctly, the puree of 6 billion would be only a fraction of an inch thick.
I am reminded of an old Ziegler cartoon from The New Yorker. A "Man in the street" TV reporter has gone into a department store, and stuck his microphone under the nose of one of the sales clerks. The sales clerk remonstrates:
First of all, I am Debbie the person!
