I just reread this. Its
great! Thanks Brad

Speaking of complexity.............
If I read this aright, I see
a parable of the social/economic world:
Left to their own devices,
persons devolute (a cloised system follows the 2nd law of
thermodynamics).
With a good benefactor (AKA "sun"), persons can
elaborate ever higher cultural self-formations.
If one does not like
the phrase "Leisure is the basis of culture", perhaps the following
will be more agreeable: "Being underwritten by a good benefactor (the
Sun, e.g.) provides the conditions of leisure (relief from impingement
by "the second law") under which culture (more highly organized
structures) can arise.
"Paying your dues" just means that somehow
you managed not to succumb to the organized forces of social entropy
you aspired to become a part of. There is a wheel of karma, and
it's not "cosmic" except in the [highly significant!] sense that
out ethno-customs structure our whole world of life (AKA
cosmos).
