A very thought provoking piece. Could it be that war, unlike the
aforementioned farming, contributes to esotericism? Or, maybe the pastoral
quality of farming does not goad the mind as does the fear and horror of the
battlefield.

Perhaps we find farming, the production of sustenance for most of the
world's human population, too mundane to consider that farmers may have as
qualified a sense of the esoteric but consider it to be commonplace among
any intelligent peoples.

Perhaps we have not spoken to enough farmers. After all, they are too busy
eking out an existence to be able to sit for hours discoursing on worldly
events.

As for the Amish, it may have something to do with "Look after yourself and
the earth (Gaia, ... whatever) that gives you life and you will have a
better community. Look after your community, and your community will look
after you."
