This kind of thing gets even worse in a large organization. In my days as a policy wonk in the Canadian public servant I spent very little time wondering what I believed and a great deal of time wondering what the Minister, his Deputy and his Assistant Deputy believed, and whether they all believed the same thing.
THhings would be so much simpler if our betters would tell us:
Sonny (Cutie...), here is what I want you to answer when I ask you this question, which I will ask you in about 3 and 1/2 minutes from now. Have you got it or do I need to repeat your answer to help you make sure you got it right? I will ask: "Do you like working unpaid overtime on third shit?" You will answer: "I like it a lot."
(The question and answer above are just examples -- perhaps with misspoellings even... --, please substitute whatever your boss wants you to say to whatever question he or she asks you.)
