It is what dmix is made for. You must look if it is an alsa-plugin(s) package
in debian. And be sure at you have a recent version of the alsa drivers.

If it doesn't help, you must look in the doc at the alsa website and write a
~/.asoundrc with a dmix entry in it, and tell the apps to use it. Alsa will see
this dmix entry as a new device and use it. http://www.alsa-project.org/ In the
doc section, it is an example of .asoundrc file for each single sound chip.

http://alsa.opensrc.org have some good advice too.
