Why pdf? Mainly because it is good looking. I done it with lyx. We can use
another format. lyx can export to latex, so it must be possible to generate
almost anything from latex files. A problem can be at lyx don't use the needed
latex class in order to be able to generate a given format.

Another solution can be to generate or make some man pages from those docs.

The main problem I see with pdf is at it add a dependency that can be easily
skipped with a format such as man or even ASCII text.
