Hello!
Welcome to yet another, long awaited release of FVWM-Crystal project! This
time it's a "development" version, not polished, rather sturdy, but working
as usual. There are new recipes, support for new applications and, of course,
bugfixes (and new bugs). You can grab it from:
http://download.gna.org/fvwm-crystal/3.0.5/
But before I'll start listing all of the new features, I want to give huge
thanks to Dominique Michel, the person who almost single handedy created
this version. At first, Dominique started his own fork of Crystal, called
"Crystal Audio", but after a while I've asked him to combine his modifications in the
main tree, and here they are. At one point in the Crystal's development
there were so much different patches in my darcs repository (some of them applied
from Michel's emails, some grabbed from his own darcs repo), that my copy of
the repository became extremely slow and sluggish. I've tried to resolve the
problems, but the easiest way to do that was to abandon my own version of
the repository, and just start from scratch using Dominiques version. Because of
that those of you, who are using Crystal from the darcs repo, may experience
problems on the upgrade; I'm suggesting downloading a new fresh copy of the
repository and applying your changes on it.
Now it's time to list some of the major features of the upcomming version!
- two new recipies: SilentHacker (clean and aesthetic), and Thin (modified
version of Nebulae)
- new default behaviour of the "Default" and "Default with ACPI" window
lists;
because many of you wanted to see windows only from the current page, this
mode is used as a standard - you can of course modify it in the recipies
- some application icons (Mozilla applications, commercial applications like
Acrobat Reader and others) have been removed due to the incompatibility
with
GPL license. I'm planning to release a separate package with additional
non-free artwork. I hope that now there will be no problem with including
this release in Debian GNU/Linux - if you will find other icons which need
to be removed, let me know
- Crystal has now support for session management, it automatically
recognizes
that a session manager is active and gives additional controls for saving
and restoring sessions
- new supported software: MOC, Audacious and alsaplayer music player, amixer
(at last!) audio mixer, stalonetray and mplayer
- application database has been reorganized to be more friendly with
FreeDesktop.org standards
- there are many new applications in the app database
There are also many more numerous bugfixes and improvements, if you want,
you can check out the ChangeLog.
I hope that you will like this version - there are many things which need
polishing, but I hope that these issues will be solved in the next release.
Right now I'm planning to focus on the Crystal's website and the wiki, to
make a good place with documentation on-line.
Until next time!
Very nice! I am a new user here and (luckily) found you yesterday, when
3.0.5 was already for download. Anyway, I have a few questions since I
am new to FVWM-Crystal.
* I saw on the screenshot page that a person named "NEMO" got the
GNOME Applications and Settings menus on the main menu. I have
asked around, and done tons of searching, but have not got a
straight answer. Is this possible, and if so, how would I
implement this? If no one answers, I may not be able to use it as
my default desktop enviroment, seeing as not all of my programs
are supported (only a portion of them are actually shown in the
default menu). Another question which walks hand-in-hand with
this, how do I edit the menu? I would like to include "Help" and
other stuff.
* I have problems with trying to use the Wallpaper manager
(hsetroot) and Rox-filer on the desktop. Whenever I choose a
wallpaper from the Wallpaper section, it says "Wallpaper not
found", but I can always find it with Rox-filer. Is there anything
like a patch that I would need for this? If not, is there a way to
fix this?
* I am considering this for a distro I am thinking of making based
on Debian. I have a lot of stuff that would need to happen, and I
am not guaranteeing this will come to be (seeing as I am twisting
between Debian and the distro a friend of mine is making called
"Salocin Linux"), but if it does happen, is there anything that
would need to be done to comply with this? Is there anything you
would like to mention?
* Is there a place that describes how to make themes and other
documentation? I am going to try to use this in my business to
demonstrate how powerful Linux can be, but would like to have a
theme that would look like Windows XP and Windows Vista (perhaps).
These are all my questions. I know there is a lot. If someone would help
me with any of these, that would be appreciated. I hope to use this more
in the future, seeing as it already looks good!
AA Boy
