3.2.5 in Debian is broken. It my fault, but I could not test it on Debian until
recently. It will be fixed with 3.2.6, which is on sourceforge, and in Debian
hopefully this week-end according to Vincent Bernat, the Debian maintainer.

For your configuration files, they have not been overwritten. Some preferences
files have been overwritten, but only to make them to work with 3.2.5, and
you can always change them again from the preferences menu. But no other
of your custom files have been overwritten.

It is a new preferences system for the fonts. If you don't like big fonts, just
change them into the preferences menu. I chosse big fonts because they
will be readable on any screen, when small fonts need a magnifying glass
on small screens.

It is a lot of changes, including the use of infostore variables. You can find
indications about what to do in the INSTALL file (which is not distributed by
Debian). You can find it here:
https://sourceforge.net/p/fvwm-crystal/code/HEAD/tree/INSTALL

It is also a few helper scripts. On Debian they are in
/usr/doc/fvwm-crystal/examples

It is also a new fvwm-crystal man page.

You can download all the old versions at sourceforge. Be aware Debian apply
some patches which are not in these archives. You have to look at the
Debian packages git to find them. Or maybe the old version for Debian stable
will do it.

About the stability, I didn't get stability issue, but it is some bashisms in
3.2.5. You have to wait next week for 3.2.6 to be in Sid, according to
Vincent Bernat, the Debian maintainer. Note these bashisms don't
affect the stability, they make some functions to not work, or work partially.

I also made a big change to how the preferences are applied. They don't
need a restart anymore. This is really a good move, but it implied to make
changes on how the files are read, more exactly on which files are read
by a given file. If you made huge changes, this also can break things.

My main distro is gentoo, so I could not test Crystal on Debian until recently.

I am surprised because the other users returns I get are very positives.
They said fvwm-crystal is easier to use than before, and is more consistent
between the different recipes.

Also, if you don't like the Amiga recipe or the FVWM-Crystal desktop manager,
nobody is forcing you to choose them in the preferences. And I didn't changed
the existing recipes look, or the other dekstop managers, or the feel of the
styles.

The recipe geometry is unified, which make possible to change the recipe
without to lost windows in the wild. And you can choose how many desktop
pages you want, this will apply to all recipes, and even when you change from
a 9x1 desktop to a 1x1 desktop, no opened window will be lost.

Also, I unified the preferences between the recipes and added a few ones.
As example, you can choose if you want or not the Crystal menu with the left
click on the root window, and this will apply to all recipes.

Also, If you made your own recipes/functions and not contributed them
to the project, it is your problem.
I can help you if you come with specific questions, or even give them a try
if you send them to me. I am even open to incorporate them in Crystal.

But I cannot do more or be taken for responsible if your changes are
broken after a so big update. I made several versions, and it is not my fault
if no
one in Debian did care enough to update Crystal before, or even to make a bug
report asking to update Fvwm-Crystal.

An alternative is to install only the dependencies with apt-get, and install
Crystal
from its svn, That way, you will get the changes one after the other, and be
able to
ask questions immediately if something break. It is the fvwm-crystal-commits
email list where you will get informed about all the commits. It is a low
volume list.
https://sourceforge.net/p/fvwm-crystal/mailman/

That would also help me, because more peoples are using the svn version,
which is my only desktop, more the chances will be big for eventual
issues to be discovered and corrected before the releases.

Best,
Dominique
