Sigh, I'm out of ideas.  Would it be possible that I get an ssh
account on a machine where fvwm crashes?  All I'd need is gdb, the
sources from which the crashing fvwm was built, and a spare X
server running somewhere.

Well, maybe compiling fvwm with efence turns something up?
