You have my sympathy.  English seems pretty random to me too.

I had a question about your latest change.
I put in comments framing the area I didn't understand, like this:

.\"needswork
...
.\"end needswork

If you can mark areas of the man page you would like reviewed,
that would get rid of the line number problem.
