 % freetype-config --version
9.1.3
 % emerge -s freetype
      Latest version installed: 2.1.2-r1

X was built with this in my host.def.
#define HasFreetype2           YES
#define UseFreetype2           YES
#define Freetype2LibDir        /usr/lib

 # updatedb
 # locate libfreetype
/usr/lib/libfreetype.a
/usr/lib/libfreetype.la
/usr/lib/libfreetype.so
/usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6
/usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6.3.1
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libfreetype.a

hmm, so I have three versions? 9.1.3, 2.1.2 and 6.3.1 interesting.
