I don't see anything that forbids it.  Even if no X Server
implements them, there may be future extensions in servers other
than X.org that misuse the depth (break the specs?) for similar or
other reasons.

We should at least check that the X server supports the ARGB
extension (with XQueryExtension) before making assumptions about
interpreting the depth in such a peculiar way.  This would be
done somewhere in the startup code (fvwm.c).

Is there any documentation about how to detect ARGB?
