Well, I don't think I understood, because if I did, I would not expect
the fix you proposed to work. But:

Changing the Layer works beautifully. Thank you ever so much! - This has
been annoying me to no end.

The only annoying problem I have left with Nautilus and FVWM is if I try
to rename something on the desktop: Nautilus changes the text under the
icon to a text-box, but I can't type into it. It doesn't gets focus, for
some reason. (I'm using SloppyFocus.)
It works fine if the icon isn't on the desktop, i.e. is in a Nautilus
folder-window.
