Such a naming scheme provides the user with an option to have
multiple versions installed at once.  Which does imho have
certain practical value per se.

In Fedora world, there are various exmaples of such approach,
such as e.g. samba4, xmms2, or softwarecollections.org.

I'm wondering whether there is a good reason not to go this way.
