Yes, this should work in most case ... but here this gives:

Package fontconfig was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `fontconfig.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'fontconfig' found

:o)

and of course I run XFree-4.3 with fontconfig.pc at the good place
(vs XFree-4.3) but not at the standrad place.
