One thing that doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet in this thread is that "configuring it completely to one's tastes" is an elusive goal for many, including myself. I've spent embarassing amounts of time configuring various window managers "to perfection", only to realize that I didn't like the result. In fact, the themes and layouts that I've used the longest turned out to be ones which I've futzed with the least. There's something to be said for having this done by someone competent in UI design and color coordinating (consider the reason for Apple's success), at least as a starting point for the general user. "Choice" is great, until it becomes an overhwelming sea in which you helplessly drown.
