Indeed I spotted kdm as the actor to talk to for these actions. There
is an api to kdm, clumsy though, I thought fvwm might have a way to
talk to kdm, never thought to replace kdm. Your suggestion seems ok.
Guess Ill have to rummage thru rc files to have qingy started instead
of kdm. Thanks a lot!
Yet a part of my question stays unanswered: how does the kde-fvwm
merge work, and does it bring something to the fvwm user?
Well, not merge, integration or whatever the term, to get the best of
both realms, without switching context.

You can do this using qingy. You just Ctrl+Alt+F* to switch vt, and
start another session with X. And then you can Ctrl+Alt+F* to switch
between them. Btw, this is not suposed to be the task of fvwm.

Once again, qingy can do this. Logout fvwm and then on qingy select
"suspend". Once again, this is not the task of fvwm.
Kde interacts with kdm to achieve the above. Btw, qingy is a logon
manager, just like kdm, and being independent allows it to be more
flexible than kdm.
Forgot to mention, qingy is a framebuffer logon manager, while kdm
runs under X. Both ways have their pros and cons..
