That depends on the context it is being called from.  If you're
right-clicking on a menu called from a menu for instance, then the
context is known.  Now, since this "Gnome desktop" you speak of probably
overlays itself over the root-window it's no surprise you get this.  If
you want to enforce a context-neutral operation, use:

NoWindow FvwmIdent
