Yes, GNOME, KDE, XFCE and maybe other desktop systems build their menus using .desktop files. They may be in different places, but most of them are to be found at /usr/share/applications, at least on my Gentoo system. The specifications I mention below tells where they are supposed to be found. You can find the desktop entry specification at http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/ and the desktop menu specification at http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/latest/ Reading those specifications may be useful for anybody implementing a program to build a menu based on the .desktop files from GNOME, KDE, XFce and others.
