We have it running with LDAP, you need a SmartDirectory (formerly known as Account 
Management Module) license to do that.
For basic authenication you don't need to do any changes to AD, that's the way we do 
it.
If you want the FW be able to change settings on the user or be able to set properties 
per user (like login times, encryption, etc) you'll need the do a schema change (which 
is not a difficult action), so that these properties are part of the AD userobject.
