You can comfortably upgrade from at least NGAI to R65 directly. I recommend that you not perform an in-place upgrade; instead, plan to to an upgrade_export / upgrade_import onto new hardware (or virtual machine). This will save you a load of trouble down the road. You will need to regenerate your licenses -- but there is not cost involved with this; if you've already relicensed more than a few times, you'll need to call checkpoint's account services to get the counter reset, but so long as you are current on your support, they shouldn't balk too much.
