Usually you can get the export with the old version upgrade_tools and
import with no problems in the newer version (I guess that's what you did),
but I have learned it is in fact better to follow the CP suggestion and
download and use newer version tools and use them to get the export.

I cannot tell you why you got the error, but maybe doing what was mentioned
above might help you.
