Ok. Let's thing from start. I guess you're in a switched environnement. Are the port on the switch with fixed setting or auto-negotiate ? And in Solaris ? It's better to have both fixed at the same settings.
Are your ports in "fastport" or not ? "Fastport" (Cisco's terminology) is when the switch doesn't try to discover if a switch or a hub is connected to a port. This avoid the spanning tree discovery (30-40 seconds), but can lead to loops if you connect a hub somewhere.
