While MRTG is good for overall bandwidth reporting, we also use a tool
called
"ntop" (freeware runs on most BSD/Linux boxes).

This breaks the traffic down into common protocols (TCP - smtp/http... etc
UDP.... etc).

It will actually give you a reasonably good idea of how your pipe is being
used. Then you can get something like packeteer to manage that bandwidth.

Subject: [FW1] Bandwidth reporting suggestions

Im currently involved in a project to revamp our security policy. In order
to convince the executives here that we need to include a policy concerning
video\audio streaming and various other network hogs, I need to be able to
show that it has an effect on our network. In other words, I need proof
that it's a problem. I'm currently hunting for products that will allow me
to report on what various types of packet traffic is being sent across my
pipe at any given time. I thought that perhaps some of you might have a
few suggestions as far as where to look. Products such as Checkpont's
Floodgate are accomplishing alot more than I really need to and I'm looking
to avoid a hefty pricetag. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
