You can make backups if you like. Resolution 718 in Nokia's Knowledgebase
covers this. However, you really don't need to.

The nice thing about the Nokia platform is that every version is contained
in it's own directory. If you're going from, say, 4.1 SP1 des to 4.1 SP1
strong, the relevant bits from your 4.1 SP1 des directory are copied over
and merged over into your 4.1 SP1 strong directory. Your 4.1 SP1 des
directory will remain there until you remove the package from Voyager, so
you can always go back to it if necessary.

The newpkg command handles all of this for you.
