The nokia platform is FreeBSD unix that is thinned out a bit. The HA option
is using VRRP. I have implemented it and it works fine.

Moving from Solaris to Nokia is not that difficult and will provide you with
a few benefits. The Nokia platform tends to be slightly easier to config
(for non-UNIX types), and has an HTTP interface for config. I am not 100%
sure, but the performance is slightly higher on Nokia.

The down side is that you give up a lot of the UNIX tools that you may be
using now.

For HA on Solaris you can use StoneBeat or CheckPoint. The former is
pricey. I have not worked with the latter.

        Subject: [FW1] High Availability (Solaris and Nokia)

        I am currently running our Firewall (version 4.0) on a Solaris 2.6
box and am looking to upgrade the hardware and software. Shortly after the
hardware is upgraded I'll have budget to add a high availability option.

        One of our people went to a Nokia sales presentation and said that
we don't need to purchase the Checkpoint or other vendors high availability
product because high availability comes with a Nokia box.

        Could someone knowledgeable about these issues help with the pros
and cons of switching from Solaris to a Nokia box. Also I'd appreciate some
comments about Nokia's (free) high availability vers Checkpoint's.
