Purely a guess.

I would imagine that if you pull any one of the
three, life will stop.

fw (FW-1 mod v4.1)  - processes the policy et'al
fw (FW-1 drv v4.1)  - handles /dev/fw0
fwip (FW-1 IP v4.1)  - intercepts I/O through the IP stack
