Does anyone have any experience with this extension? Is it good/bad/hard to implement/etc.?

Yes, FW-1 can manage an exterior router, but you need to purchase a license (very expensive) for Checkpoint's Open Security Extension to enable that capability. Just contact your reseller to purchase the license.
