I think PHP applications could benefit of this approach as well and
the question remains - is it possible?
I think the only way to really do this is to write php daemons. This is possible, however, PHP is not the best language to do this in. What you are looking for ia Java ;)
A Zend_Daemon base class would actually be very interesting to see.
