I wonder if there is a possibility to configure a timeout for responses for
the XmlRpc client class.
There is a timeout setting to set the socket-timeout, but if the socket
could be established, and there comes no answer from the backend servers,
the connection will not be released after the set 10 seconds, nor after the
30 seconds of max_execution_time.
Has anyone else such problems, or a hint to solve it?

I'm not sure who the author for this component is, but it would probably
be a good idea to implement
::setOptions(array $options)
which will allow the setting of timeout value's, and other options. I
prefer that every component uses the same method-name (setOptions) for
setting options, as this opens up a lot of potential (has been discussed
previously).
