And I dont understand your problems...

My problem was that I update to infrequently ;)
My last update was on 22.02(Ian's mail was even older).

However, I still think that there should be a way to separate continents
from regions(which might be complicated as Stéphane already pointed out).
Likewise, it would be great if instead of a string (with a list of country
codes separated by white spaces) objects would be given back.

Enough of the feature request ;)

Zend_Locale supports to have lists of the following types :

Languages + Languages per Country list
Scripts
Countries
Territories (these are continents) + Country per Territorylist
Calendars
Months + shortened and abbreviated
Days + shortened and abbreviated
Dateformat
Timeformat
Timezones
Currencies + Signs and country usage

These lists are avaiable since 24.2 for all languages and were included
due
to ZF-959.
If these informations are useless for you dont use them...
If anyone is in need of other functionallity he should add an jira issue,
so
we can add this functionallity to the framework.

I understand that the CLDR only provides translations for the names of
regions, continents and countries, but shouldn't it then be Zend_Locale's
job to make them available in a usable manner?

Just create another XML-file(or even 3 separate files) that hierarchically
links continents, regions and countries to their codes.
Otherwise - as Ian already mentioned - those functions will remain
useless,
which would be a waste of time.

Btw.: North America actually is a continent. At least that's what they
taught _me_ back in school ;)

PS: If you want me to compile a list like this that wouldn't be such a big
deal. Just ask.
