You should check out action controller helpers:

    http://framework.zend.com/manual/en/zend.controller.actionhelpers.html

These are the best way to add re-usable methods that all controllers in
your tree can access. Additionally, check out the plugin architecture:

    http://framework.zend.com/manual/en/zend.controller.plugins.html

While you *can* create your own extension of Zend_Controller_Action that
your controllers can inherit from, in most cases action helpers and
plugins can achieve the same functionality, and have the added benefit
of being portable enough to utilize in other sites easily.
